The union representing ground staff at Berlin’s two commercial airports announced yesterday that their members would strike today in a dispute over pay.
According to trade union Verdi, the walkout by staff at Tegel and Schoenefeld airports began at 5am local time (4am GMT) and will last until around 11am.
The airports were reported to be expecting severe disruption as a result of the industrial action which includes staff who load and unload airplanes, marshal them or work on check-in desks.
Verdi is demanding a pay rise from around 11 to 12 euros per hour for its members and stated that wage negotiations with employers had failed to yield results.
