As of today, EU roaming charges are officially a thing of the past as a new European Union law comes into effect. Now, when travelling within the European Union, you will be able to use your monthly allowance of calls, at no extra cost.
Previously, roaming charges were added to the cost of calls, texts and data usage when connected to a mobile network in another European country. In the past, this has led to consumers facing extortionate bills for using their phone abroad.
A statement released by the European Commission said:
“Each time a European citizen crossed an EU border, be it for holidays, work, studies or just for a day, they had to worry about using their mobile phones and a high phone bill from the roaming charges when they came home.”
The new law means that you can call, text and use the internet on your mobile from anywhere in the EU for the same price as you would pay at home. However, UK consumer group Which? has warned of potential “unexpected charges” if mobile users exceed agreed minutes, texts, and data use.
The majority of networks are imposing a “fair usage” policy, which caps your data allowance while you are out of the UK. Which? has advised mobile users travelling to the EU to check the details of their tariffs with their phone providers.
