In 2015, China’s airports handled 910m passengers, but this total is expected to surge to 1.5 billion passengers by 2020 and 2.2bn by 2025.
Last week the China Daily reported that government sources had revealed plans to build a large number of new airports across the country over the next five to ten years. According to China Daily, the new facilities will range from major international airports to regional transport hubs.
By 2020 the number of civil airports in China is expected to rise from 207 (the number recorded at the end of 2015) to around 260. Two of the international developments include Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Both of these new major airports are expected to have a capacity of over 80 million passengers per year.
The strategy for the construction is being drawn up by the country’s National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).
