Red Alert for Sicily airports as Etna continues to erupt

Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily is Europe’s most active volcano and it erupted yesterday as a result of magma reacting with the moisture from surrounding snow.

The ongoing eruption has caused a significant ash cloud and the aviation colour code has been raised to red as a result.

Catania Airport’s crisis until Catania Airport’s crisis unit has announced it is closing part of the airspace until 1pm local time today, and Flights at Comiso Airport are grounded until 2pm local time.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in Toulouse (VAAC) has reported that the eruption is weakening but the code red remains in place.

Passengers have been warned to expect delays and are advised to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
