British Airways cabin crew vote to strike

Unite union has announced that British Airways cabin crew have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strikes over a pay dispute.

The action, which will take place at Heathrow airport, comes after cabin crew rejected a 2% pay offer.

The dispute concerns around 4000 staff members who have joined BA since 2010 on “Mixed Fleet” contracts.

According to Unite, earnings were advertised at between £21,000 and £25,000 but, in reality, start at just £12,000 with £3 an hour flying pay.

In addition, on-board customer service managers have endured a six-year pay freeze despite IAG reporting profits of £1.4bn, up 64% on last year, and CEO Willie Walsh receiving a pay packet of £8.8m.

Unite will meet in the coming days to finalise dates but the action is expected to begin after 21st December.

It has not yet been determined whether the strike will affect travellers over Christmas.
