After more than 20 years, commercial flights will be returning to Carlisle Airport next year. From June, the small Cumbrian airport plans to offer flights to London Southend, Belfast and Dublin.
The Stobart Group, which is leading the project, wants tourists heading to the Lake District, Scotland and North of England to consider flying to Carlisle in future.
Stobart is also confident that their airport can present a new option for London-bound travellers from the North East. Whilst Newcastle is well served with links to Heathrow, Carlisle opens up a route to the east of the capital, with Liverpool Street Station only a 50 minute train journey from London Southend.
Kate Willard, head of corporate projects for the Stobart Group told the Chronicle:
“In January, the airport is scheduled to sign a deal with an airline to take its passengers to London and over the Irish Sea. The first flight is set for June 4.
“We’re having a number of conversations at the moment, and we’ll definitely announce a carrier in the New Year.”
Carlisle Airport’s small size means that passengers should spend much less time negotiating security queues, which will hold particular appeal for time-short business travellers. In addition, flights to Dublin will allow passengers connecting to the US to clear American security within the Irish airport to avoid lengthy lines on arrival.
